The kitchen is used to prep food, so it does need to be brightly lit. It is important to be able to mask that light so that it does not spill out into adjacent areas. One easy to forget problem is when a kitchen window overlooks an outdoor area, and that light spills out there messing up whatever mood lighting you have set up. Covering the window is usually a good idea.
