The Guide to Getting it On!

Review of The Guide to Getting it On! by Paul Joannides

Targeted primarily at college students and others a little more contemporary in their thinking, and with wonderful comic book style illustrations by Daerick Gross, this is one of the few general sex how to books that we would heartily recommend. Now in its 2015 8th edition, it has gone from its original 369 pages to a whopping 1,152 pages and is available in a Kindle edition.

The general approach is fun, playful, and very sex positive. We found the information to be very accurate and up to date (something woefully not true with many sex books), and presented in a fun and informative style. Each chapter is broken down into small bite sized sections, so it is very easy to read and digest.

The less formal style of this book has made it very popular for use in college sex education classes. The author did not start out as a sex educator. Paul Joannides, Psy.D. is a research psychoanalyst by training. He has become very well known in sex ed circles, though, winning the 2014 Professional Excellence Award from the American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors and Therapists. He has been on the editorial boards of the Journal of Sexual Medicine and the American Journal of Sexuality Education. The book itself has won tons of awards over the years.

It covers a wide range of topics, from talking to kids about sex to sexual kinks. It has been updated to include the latest topics, such as sexting, and how porn has become the source of sex education for so many and the ways that might not be such a good thing.

Never preachy, always upbeat, and darned entertaining, it covers all of the basics, and a lot of important territory that many other books skip over. Along with The Good Vibrations Guide to Sex, we’d recommend this as a must read even for the sexually jaded who feel they know it all already. If you know someone going off to college, make sure this gets packed in their luggage.
